**Introduction to Scallions**

Scallions, also known as green onions, spring onions, northern onions, or fire onions, are easy to grow in household pots. Their robust vitality allows them to thrive in both cold and hot climates, making them suitable for cultivation in various regions. You can grow them with confidence.

**Balcony Pot Planting Time for Scallions**

In southern regions, scallions can be planted year-round, while in the north, it's necessary to ensure adequate warmth for winter balcony cultivation.

Here's a guide to growing scallions on your balcony, shared with the vegetable enthusiasts of the Fanmimi Blog. Now you can enjoy the taste of home-grown scallions! Whether you love them like some do with cilantro, or just enjoy them in dishes like scallion fried eggs or as a garnish in soups, you can have them readily available. Plant some if you love them; there's no need to buy them every time. For more on balcony vegetable gardening and modern agriculture, visit Fanmimi Blog at fanmimi.com. **Balcony Pot Planting Method for Scallions**

1. Preparation:

   - Any container will do for scallion planting, be it a flower pot or a foam box. Just ensure there are small drainage holes at the bottom to allow excess water to escape. If you have unused space in your community, you can plant scallions directly there, if you don't mind others helping themselves.

2. Sowing:

   - Make small holes in the soil surface every 10-15cm. Put 3-5 seeds in each hole and cover them with a thin layer of soil (about 0.5-1cm thick, approximately 1-2 times the diameter of the seeds). Water thoroughly. (To speed up germination, soak seeds in 55°C warm water for 20 minutes, then dry and sow.)

3. Germination:

   - Once sown, there's no need to transplant the scallions; they can grow right where they are. If you plan to transplant after germination, sow seeds more densely. Spread seeds evenly on the soil surface, cover with a layer of moist fine soil, gently press down, and water.

   - Maintenance is simple: just keep the soil moist. Germination typically occurs within 12-16 days if the temperature is favorable.

4. Transplanting:

   - Keep the soil moist after germination. When the seedlings reach about 15cm, ensure sufficient soil moisture to promote rapid growth. Reduce watering gradually during the mid-growth phase and fertilize every 10 days or so. Rice washing water is an eco-friendly and cost-effective fertilizer, or you can use specialized flower fertilizer.

   - If you plan to transplant from the start, do so around 40 days after sowing. However, the exact time depends on the situation; if the seedlings are too crowded, you can transplant earlier.

   - Before transplanting, prepare the soil by watering it the night before to ensure it's fully hydrated. Dig holes 4-6cm deep every 12-15cm, select 3-5 robust seedlings, place them in the holes, gently press down, cover with a layer of moist fine soil, level it, gently press again, and water. The subsequent maintenance is the same as before.

   - Based on personal experience, it's better to avoid transplanting if you're not skilled, as it can easily damage the seedlings, leading to transplantation failure or poor subsequent growth. I've found that non-transplanted scallions often fare better and grow more steadily.

5. Harvesting:

   - Both the white part and the green leaves of scallions are edible. However, it's recommended not to pull up the roots but to cut or pinch the scallions about 2-3cm above the soil surface. The remaining part can continue to grow, allowing you to enjoy scallions throughout the year. Originally published by Fanmimi Blog on 20161213, updated on 2302.
